According to an article in the NYTimes yesterday (the science section), gossip is good for you.

Gossip serves a purpose besides being entertaining - it helps bring people together and it provides behavioral information about who's following the rules and who's breaking them. It brings us together, it allows us to have something in common with others so it's a great communication tool. Who knew?

So the next time you're reading gossip, spreading it around or just plain enjoying it, know that you're doing something good for society.
