When A Stranger Calls # 1 at the Movies
"When A Stranger Calls," was number one at the movies this weekend scaring up $22 million*, not bad for a remake of a 1979 film with a newcomer, Camilla Belle, in the lead. The movie was targeted at teens especially girls.
It's a tough weekend for movies with competition from The Super Bowl so movies like, "Something New" starring the hot aussie actor, Simon Baker, did not do well (debuting in 6th place with $5 million) but childrens' movies continued to fare well such as "Nanny McPhee" in 3rd place and "Hoodwinked" in 5th place.
The Oscar nominations also helped a few movies increase in ticket sales especially for "Brokeback Mountain" which was also helped by an additional 435 additional theaters showing the gay cowboy flick.
Weekend Box Office Feb. 3 to Feb. 5
1. When A Stranger Calls - $22 million
2. Big Momma's House 2 - $13.35 million
3. Nanny McPhee - $9.9 million
4. Brokeback Mountain - $5.7 million
5. Hoodwinked - $5.3 million
*estimates as of Sunday afternoon
